We chose the Whitsundays as it is a place we both love and it was somewhere that we knew everyone would absolutely enjoy. Airlie Beach was the perfect location for our guests to have plenty to see and do, stay close together and enjoy a warm winter break given that most of our guests were coming from New Zealand.

We had visited the Whitsundays once previously and fell in love with the place. We have a very close friend there that has made it his home and it gives us the perfect excuse to visit and enjoy everything it has to offer.

We stayed here for 11 days, we arrived on the Sunday before the wedding so we could spend a week enjoying the company of our friends and family. We also had our Hens and Bucks during the week. I was able to have a lunch at the Sailing club before heading to Mama Africa’s where we had it exclusively until 10.30pm and the following day the boys went on the Ocean Rafting Tour before also heading to Mama Africa’s. It worked out fantastically and we both really enjoyed our days so we were glad we planned it this way. All our guests loved having the time to be able to go sightseeing and enjoy the local watering holes and restaurants in the lead up to the wedding.

I did not really have a particular theme in mind while planning the wedding I just knew I wanted it to be simple and understated. Felicity from beautiful beach Weddings was able to nail this perfectly and we were absolutely stoked with how the venue looked. We had stunning lace over Hessian squares on the table tops with candles and a small vase of Gypsophila. We had white blankets with umbrellas for people to laze around and lots of small tables and chairs inside and out. I did not have a seated reception as I wanted guests to be able to move around freely and mingle amongst themselves and just relax.

Hire a venue decorator! It was the best decision I made. After having 3 sisters marry before me I knew I wanted to have to do zero preparation in the week leading up to the wedding and just enjoy the time with our guests. Having someone take care of the whole venue setup and pack down was just awesome once everything was booked we literally just had to turn up and then we were able to leave at the end of the night knowing we did not have to be back early in the morning to pack it down it was the best feeling. Also take a moment for yourself on the day and just stand back and observe, take it all in as it really does fly by.

What was the best thing about having a destination wedding?

It was just great knowing that all our guests had made the effort to come all that way just for us and that each of them truly wanted to be there with us on our special day. The absolute best thing though is having everyone in one place for a week, it is probably the only time you can make that happen and it is just really special.

All the local businesses we used and booked for our wedding were just amazing. So incredibly helpful and knew what they were doing I really didn’t need to worry about anything. I literally just had to book and pay for things, give them times and that was it. The day flowed perfectly and without having to lift a finger it was all done for us. Chris and I couldn’t be happier with how the day turned out.

Jemma and Abraham – Mandalay Chapel

We chose a destination wedding as both sides of the families lived in different states or countries. Rather than burdening our families with the cost of attending our wedding we decided to elope and could not resist the beautiful sights of the Whitsundays.

Lauren and Daniel – Coral Sea Resort

We both wanted a small simple wedding we just didn’t know where. We spent months looking for venues in the area around our home town but we weren’t totally in love with anything we looked at. One day I started looking up destination weddings when I came across Coral Sea Resort and instantly knew that was the place it had to be.

Jo and Tony – Whitehaven Beach and Coral Sea Resort

We chose the Whitsundays because it was a midpoint for all our family and friends who were coming from New Zealand, Queensland, Western Australia and America. We had visited the Whitsundays a year earlier and fell in love with it.
