Your Love Story…

We met when I moved to Mackay and started to attend Mackay North State High School. As our families lived in the same street, we got to know each other while catching the school bus together. Following high school I went to James Cook University in Townsville, while Kieran stayed in Mackay to complete his apprenticeship. It was a long four years of counting down until Kieran could come to Townsville for a long weekend, or I was on holidays and could come home to Mackay. Once I had graduated, I moved to Biloela for my first job and spent another year apart. Finally, I got a job in Mackay and moved back home to be closer to Kieran and my family. It certainly was testing spending so much time apart, but I think that is what makes us so strong.

After 10 years of waiting, Kieran proposed to me on Christmas day 2015. I was definitely not expecting it and was still in my pyjamas.

Destination Wedding…

We chose to have our wedding in Airlie Beach because we absolutely love spending time there.

The scenery was perfect for our ideal beach wedding.

There were a large range of venues which suited us as we preferred a ceremony and reception by the beach at the same venue. It was lovely to think that our guests could all have a wonderful holiday in the beautiful Whitsundays while visiting for our wedding.

It made for a relaxing atmosphere for our families as they didn’t have people staying at their houses, and everyone could meet up at cafes or restaurants, instead of catering for people.

The Whitsundays…

We had spent many long weekends and short breaks in Airlie. It is one of our favourite places to go. We have had many trips to the islands (Whitehaven being our favourite) and the Great Barrier Reef.

Wedding Week…

We stayed in Airlie Beach for a week. A few days pre and a few days post the wedding. We had a pre-wedding dinner with our family and friends at the Anchor Bar. It was a perfect place to catch up with everyone and relax before the big day.

Brides Vision…

Our wedding theme was grey and pink. The bridesmaids had light grey infinity dresses and the groomsmen had dark grey suits. We included pink in our bouquets, buttonholes, ties and decorations.

We also had succulents as a running theme throughout the wedding. I absolutely love succulents and all of the variety that they offer! I had succulents in my bouquet, on the cake and on the wishing well/guest book table. I also made little individual succulent bowls that doubled as place cards and thank you gifts for the guests.

Sit Down or Cocktail….

We had 76 guests in total. We kept our wedding intimate by inviting close family and friends. We had a sit down reception. I felt it was more comfortable for our guests to have a sit down meal with plenty of time to mingle after the formalities.

Honeymoon Heaven….

A few weeks after our wedding we went to the Maldives for 7 wonderful nights. We stayed in an overwater bungalow with stairs leading down into the Indian Ocean. It was like living in a post card! I found myself stopping to soak in my surroundings and remind myself that it was real a few times.

Hens and Bucks….

My beautiful bridesmaids organised a high tea and cocktails in the Mackay Regional Botanic Gardens followed by a night out at the Sydney Hotshots. It was a really enjoyable hens night and it made me feel very special.

Kieran’s bucks night was held in Airlie Beach 2 nights before the wedding! It was so scary thinking of all the disastrous possibilities, but the groomsmen assured me it would be fine. They went to dinner at Mika Airlie before heading out to a local nightclub with some adult entertainment. Kieran came home on in the early hours of the day before our wedding, thankfully everything went well, although I do not recommend the stress of having a bucks so close to the wedding!

Splurge vs Save…

We prioritised our spending and splurged on the things most important to us, and saved on the less important things. Our priorities were photography and food as we wanted beautiful memories of our day and wanted the guests to feel comfortable and taken care of. We spent the extra money to have an alternate drop 3 course meal, with 3 options for main course.

Since meeting Brooke at a wedding expo, I knew she was the person who I trusted to take our pictures. I let her work speak for itself and chose her to be our photographer based on her style and beautiful pictures, rather than her prices. In fact, I did not get another quote for photography.

I saved on the wedding favours by having Mum and my Aunty Jo grow the succulents and help me pot them into little tea light candle jars I bought in bulk. Mum also potted some succulents to decorate the wishing well / guest book table. Succulents are beautiful, but they do cost a lot to buy.

The other way we saved was by taking our own cars as transportation. Cars just aren’t really our thing so we were happy to have someone take us in our own cars. No one saw us arrive in the cars, and it gave us a little extra flexibility.

Whitsunday Wedding Venue…

The main criterion for selecting our venue was that we could have both the ceremony and reception at the same place. We chose the Whitsunday Sailing Club as we liked the open air feel, beautiful views and privacy.

The reception venue was like having a blank canvas to make our very own.

The staff at the Whitsunday Sailing Club were very accommodating, and made us feel like we would be taken care of on our special day.

Whitsunday Wedding Suppliers…

My family and I went to Brisbane to look for my wedding dress initially, it certainly was underwhelming. When I heard that Under the Veil in Sarina was having a trunk show, I booked in thinking it was worth a look. I was seriously amazed by the quality service and variety of dresses available at Under the Veil! I couldn’t believe that such a wonderful bridal shop was so close to home and wish I never bothered with Brisbane. The staff at Under the Veil were so accommodating, and I absolutely loved my dress.

I had seen a lot of Joanne Dromgold’s previous work on Facebook and a lot of brides had recommended her. I couldn’t have been happier with our makeup. Paired with Luisa Johnson from Whitsundays Wedding Hair Lounge, we had the dream team to make us look so gorgeous on the big day.

The ladies from the Flower Hut arranged the most amazing bouquets based from inspiration from Pinterest and I couldn’t have loved them more. Debbie from Whitsunday Baked Creations made choosing our wedding cake a dream, it was delicious. The Event Company had so many different options to choose from, and we were very happy with how our venue turned out.

Our celebrant Helen was so warm and welcoming and added to the loving atmosphere of our ceremony. She took away all the stress involved with conducting a legal ceremony and was so helpful and caring.

Leanne and Luke – Whitsunday Pavilion and Toscana Village Resort

Our wedding was beyond realisation and fulfilment. Luke and I had always dreamed of a destination wedding. A celebration that was simple, personal and unique for our families to enjoy (without the huge price tag). The Whitsundays had held a sentimental place for both our parents

Alyce and Lachlan – Peppers Airlie Beach

Alyce met Lachlan when she first moved to the Whitsundays. He was a friend of the families and there was an instant connection between the two. After five years of dating and enjoying the seaside lifestyle of Airlie Beach they decided to tie the knot and living in the wedding heart of Australia is made perfect sense for them to host their wedding in their own home town!

Jordan and Kayla – Hamilton Island Weddings

We planned 3 weddings before we finally decided to host an intimate wedding on Hamilton Island. We thought there is no better place with the great reputation that Hamilton Island Weddings has. We landed 2 days before the big day and fell in love straight away.
