Your Love Story…

We met at a friends house warming party….Ben had just arrived from NZ. Ben retold the events to me and said he had taken a fancy to me that night and had asked his friends at that party…. “who was that cute American girl”? He thought I was American because I was loud (in a good way). I left early that night. We met again at another friends house party a few weeks after that first encounter. After sharing laughs and prank text messages, a first kiss and our life stories we started dating casually and the rest is history.

We travelled through Germany and Spain, South Africa and New Zealand in our early days and did fun activities like rally driving, dirt bike riding, quad biking and off road segway. We knew we were kindred spirits.

The proposal was the evening of December 18th 2015 in front of the Magic Fountain in Barcelona, Spain. The fountain was spurting out water in random patterns with lights that changed the colour of the water. It was amazing to see. Ben had decided to propose in Barcelona as it is one of my favorite cities and one I have always talked about. We were heading to a Flamenco performance that night for dinner and the show and Ben suggested we walk up to the fountain to have a look as it was on the way to the Flamenco show. I was initially saying to Ben we didn’t have time and that we would be late for the show. He insisted so we walked up to it. It was beautiful to watch and so I said to Ben lets take some pictures of us ……..Ben was trying to find a way to get the ring out without me noticing……he decided he would have to create a distraction…..”look over there Lid” as he pointed behind me, I turned around and couldn’t see anything. When I turned back to him to ask him what I was meant to be seeing, he was down on one knee asking me if I would marry him. After jumping back in shock I said yes and we had an applause. We walked on air to the flamenco restaurant and we called our parents that night to tell them we were now engaged.

Destination Wedding…

We are born travellers, we knew we wanted something different for our big day. We decided on Coral Sea Resort after heading up to have a look at the venue…..a wedding was scheduled on that weekend while we stayed and we thought how wonderfully laid back and beautiful it was. It was beautiful there, the service was impeccable by all the staff and the venue exceeding expectations.

Wedding Week…

We stayed a total of about 11 days in the Whitsundays.

Pre wedding we organised for our wedding guests to get together for dinner at The Clipper restaurant at Coral Sea Resort. It gave everyone a chance to meet each other before the big day. It was a great night and everyone enjoyed it. We also had our rehearsal that night with Annie our celebrant and had such a ball before returning to our guests.

Post wedding we met up by the pool and guests could help themselves to the left over wedding cake that Coral Sea were storing for us.

Wedding Day Vision…

The styling was to convey romance with a modern geometric design. Pink, burgundy, gold and indigo were the accent colours used. The dress was a dusty pink with ivory lace bodice that portrayed Australian natives in the design of the lace. The skirt of the dress was flowing, soft and very feminine. The bouquets celebrated Australian Flora with lots of gum leaves and a King Protea. I requested ribbons to be tied to all bouquets…again creating flowing lines. Two large round balloons were ordered with ribbons to be used in our pictures and these were later tied to our reception chairs.

The items for the table decorations were sourced from Kmart, Ikea, Target, Spotlight and a local Variety Store. The bunting for the cake table and “just married” was hand-made by me as well as the geometric table runner.

On the gift table we had our polaroid camera and custom made guestbook bought from a supplier on Etsy. Guests enjoyed taking pictures and writing comments.

Cocktail or Sit Down…

There were 21 guests including the bride and groom for an Aussie BBQ Buffet which was a sit down meal with no pretences. We wanted an intimate wedding so had to be selective about who to invite.

The reason for the BBQ Buffet was we couldn’t decide on a two course meal that we were sure everyone would enjoy. We also had family and friends coming from overseas and thought an Aussie BBQ Buffet would be an original idea and people would have a wide choice on what they could try. The buffet was generous and the feedback was all positive. We also wanted a sit down as it would be comfortable for everyone and it would look beautiful to have a table decorated. One long rectangular table was chosen, to create an intimate dining experience

Honeymoon Heaven…

We had a Familymoon after the wedding and went on to Hamilton Island for it. We hired out a self contained apartment to cater for us all.

Ben and I are currently on our Honeymoon which will be a year adventure travelling around Europe and are blogging our adventures along the way. Check us out here www.checkintolife.blog

Splurge Vs Save

I splurged on the dress, wedding ring and venue.

I saved money on invites and reception decorations and a videographer as a friend recorded the wedding during the day.

Whitsunday Wedding Venue…

Coral Sea Resort was chosen as we enjoyed our stay there when we were considering venues. It was paradise on Earth. We chose the reception on The Jetty as this was so unusual and to be surrounded by water would be amazing.

The ceremony was on The Lawn at Coral Sea Resort which had a stunning back drop and was perfect to get married at.

Whitsunday Wedding at Coral Sea Resort

Angela and Richard – Coral Sea Resort

When Richard and I got married we wanted somewhere a little bit different. With guests coming all the way from South Africa and New Zealand, we also wanted to give them a great experience of Australia. With the Great Barrier Reef on its doorstep, warm climate all year round and ability to cater to all budgets Airlie Beach was the perfect choice.

Cassey and Mark – Villa Botanica

Airlie Beach held some great memories for Mark and I as we got engaged on Whitehaven Beach after a helicopter ride over the “heart of the reef” just over 12 months prior to our wedding. It’s not easy trying to pick a wedding venue in the Whitsundays as there are so many possibilities.

Whitsunday Wedding Pavilion

Hannah and Simon – Whitsunday Pavilion

Holding their wedding ceremony and reception at the Whitsunday Pavilion meant that this couple had the time (and budget) to treat their guests to a sunset cruise around Pioneer Bay. Departing Port Of Airlie Marina after the ceremony allowed the wedding party to enjoy a different perspective of Airlie Beach as the sun set over the horizon.
