Whitsunday Wedding…

We both knew from the beginning that we wanted a small simple wedding we just didn’t know where. We spent months looking for venues in the area around our home town in South Australia but we weren’t totally in love with anything we looked at.

One day I started looking up destination weddings when I came across The Coral Sea Resort and instantly knew that was the place it had to be. Thankfully Dan absolutely loved it as much as I did so we booked it straight away and sent out invitations and the response we got was overwhelming with around 40 people replying saying they would love to join us all of which were traveling from South Australia.

We had both never been to the Whitsundays before but had both been to Queensland so we knew that we would love the tropical weather and the relaxed atmosphere. It turned out that we had friends that had married at that exact resort and they highly recommended it and told us how beautiful it was and we saw how amazing it looked in all their photos.

Wedding Week…

We stayed in the Whitsundays for a week spending our days before the wedding mainly checking at the main street of Airlie Beach and the marina going to the bars and restaurants with our family and friends and just relaxing in the pool at the resort. Also checking out all the shops and surrounding areas. In the days after the wedding we went paddle boarding with Whitsunday Stand Up Paddle and Kayak which was so much fun. We took a cruise with some friends on the Whitehaven Xpress which took us to Hill Inlet’s scenic lookout, Whitehaven beach and Mantaray Bay where we got to snorkel and see beautiful coral and tropical fish.

Destination Wedding…

One of the best parts of having a destination wedding was that being in the Whitsundays was our wedding and honeymoon all in one. We also made the 3,500km road trip home in Dan’s 1965 Mustang part of our honeymoon, which he had driven up to Airlie Beach with his dad and best man. It was something that he had always wanted to do and it was a lot of fun. We stopped at Surfers Paradise for a few days as well as a lot of other really nice places along the way and got to see all the major attractions that we wouldn’t have been able to see otherwise. It was also a great opportunity for all of our guests to be able to get away for a holiday and enjoy the time in beautiful Queensland with some going on to see other places on their travels home.

Wedding Day Vision…

Our wedding style was very tropical with pineapples and orchids being the main theme. Wanting to keep it simple with the tropical feel and have something a little different I chose to make pineapples the main theme throughout the whole wedding.

We had our reception on the lawn area of the resort with beautiful fairy lights and white lanterns hanging between the palm trees. Our centerpieces were glass cylinders containing a base of sand and a whole fresh pineapple on top, sitting on a burlap table runner surrounded by tall cylinder votive candles and scattered fresh white orchids. Our bouquets were silk green orchids and calla lilies which we had made locally and took to Airlie Beach with us. Pineapples were featured on our invitations, name place cards and table numbers and the guests received thank you gifts of pineapple and coconut candles.

Our wedding day was absolutely perfect and we wouldn’t have changed a thing. The resort was fantastic, from the service of all the staff, the exceptional food on the night down to all the small details they took care of which made our whole experience stress free. Lauren our wedding coordinator at the resort was great, very professional and an absolute pleasure to deal with.

Brides Wisdom…

Our advice for other couples would be to make sure you have what you both want and don’t worry about trying to please anyone else. It will come and go so fast so take the time to take in absolutely everything on the day. Don’t get worried about the small details, I spent months in the lead up making my own invitations, name place cards, seating plan and table numbers and no one keeps them or remembers them so just have fun in the lead up to your special day and enjoy it. Our photographer Brooke was just brilliant and we are so glad we chose her, so easy going and patient and captured our day perfectly. At the end of the day that’s all you have left so take the time to look into it and make sure you chose the right photographer for you.

We were so happy with everything, Felicity from Beautiful Beach Weddings who did our centrepieces, Debbie who made our stunning cake, our lovely celebrant Peter as well as the amazing hair and makeup girls Luisa and Lauriely – totally exceeded our expectations. Huge thanks to Felicity at Sunkissed Beauty Tanning @ yours as she absolutely went out of her way to help us out at the last minute after our original booking failed to show at the resort the day before the wedding and she did an amazing job.

We would highly recommend a destination wedding to anyone thinking about doing it as it is the best decision we made.

Whitsunday wedding on Hamilton Island

Sara and James – Hamilton Island Weddings

Having a destination wedding was amazing for us as we were able to have the wedding we dreamed of and all of our guests were able to make the most of the Whitsundays and make a holiday out of it. Just make sure you give your guests as much notice as you possibly can so they can join in on the celebration.

Amy and Ryland – Villa Botanica

Amy and Ryland had not visited the Whitsundays prior to their wedding day so it made perfect sense for them to stay a little longer and enjoy all that the Whitsundays has to offer. The events kicked off two days before the wedding day with an icebreaker dinner at Port Of Airlie.
