For our wedding, we wanted somewhere near the beach with a fun, causal and loving atmosphere. We started looking overseas, but the logistics seemed too hard. Also we took into consideration the travel for some our guests. Thank goodness we went somewhere in Australia, because my sister was eight and half months pregnant on our wedding day. We looked at NSW (as we have moved from there), but nothing seemed to have that wow factor, that we were after.

When looking at Queensland, the Whitsundays kept popping up in the internet searches. We heard that it is a beautiful place in the world right on our door step, and the photos of this destination were breathtaking, and most definitely lived up to the expectations while there. The Whitsundays was ideal, because it reflected everything that we wanted in our wedding.

Some people did think we were a bit silly in choosing a place where we never visited before. But, ultimately, we wanted to express our love and commitment with our closet family and friends, and of course I had my dress, what else could I ask for? I had faith in my wedding coordinator, that our image would be clearly conveyed on the day.

We ended up staying in Airlie for just under two weeks. The week leading up to the wedding, we were doing the final touches and also catching up with all our guests for dinners and lunch. After the wedding, we went to Whitehaven beach (for a post-wedding celebration), and than sailing, snorkelling/swimming, jet ski trip to Day Dream Island, also eating out at the many restaurants both romantically and socially with our guests, and of course just relaxing as husband and wife.

Our theme for the wedding was spring (yellow, mint, grey and white). I did find the theme developed as we went through the planning stage, especially after deciding on the wedding dress and bridesmaid dress.

The best thing about a destination wedding was making it a holiday with all our guests and partaking in new experiences that they never got to do before.

Every wedding is special and amazing. But why we loved ours so much because it suited our personality and what we dreamt came a reality. Our wedding was small (40 guests) and that was prefect for us, because it was more intimate, allowing time to enjoy everyone’s company, who travelled to be with us on our special day. It was such a perfect day, from the venue, weather, dresses, food, makeup, hair, cake and decorations. It was the happiest day of our lives.

Our celebrant Deanna Kent, photographer Norina (Iconic Bride Photography) and our wedding planner Jess Bruce (The Wedding Planners Whitsundays), they were the amazing ones on the day. They made our wedding, so we could enjoy the most special occasion of our lives, it would not be possible without them.

We used a coordinator from The Wedding Planners Whitsundays. Jess and her team were fantastic to work with. At the initial planning stage, I was sending emails/phone calls to other venues, but when I spoke to Jess she took the time to actually talk to me about everything and she put my mind at ease. After our first phone call, I was like, this is it. Most of the planning was done through email, Jess was very professional and efficient and she made you feel like you were her only client.

Do you have any tips or ideas to pass onto upcoming brides?

  • Wear your wedding shoes at least one month prior to the date (especially if you normally wear flats).
  • Wedding guests – it is your wedding only invite who you want there (try not to be influenced by your family).
  • Don’t forget to eat during the day and make sure you have water for after the ceremony.
  • Lastly, enjoy the day it goes so quickly.

What would be your main tip to brides planning a destination wedding?

Do keep in mind your wedding guests and what their budget is.

What was something special about your wedding?

The effort that my family and friends took to be part of our special day. Those that couldn’t be part of the day contributed in ways that made the day special. Also, finally realising our new chapter together as husband and wife. I felt like a princess for the whole day.

Do you have any tips for guest logistics?

Since most of our guests, were travelling interstate. They talked to each other and organizsed flights at the same time and a hire car or the airport shuttle. One tip I did receive from a wedding planner, was letting the guests sort out their own accommodation and travel. You provide the information, but they do need to take it on board. Otherwise, I believe it is extra stress.

Did you honeymoon, where and for how long!?

We stayed in Airlie Beach after the wedding for a week. We explored Airlie, with the many restaurants, sailing, snorkeling, Jet Ski, Whitehaven beach and just relaxing as husband and wife.

Lidija and Ben – Coral Sea Resort

With a mutual love for travelling it seemed only fitting that this adventurous couple would opt for a destination wedding. Travelling to the Whitsundays to site inspect as many venues as possible it was Coral Sea Resort that they fell in love with.

Whitsunday wedding on Hamilton Island

Sara and James – Hamilton Island Weddings

Having a destination wedding was amazing for us as we were able to have the wedding we dreamed of and all of our guests were able to make the most of the Whitsundays and make a holiday out of it. Just make sure you give your guests as much notice as you possibly can so they can join in on the celebration.
